Contribute Instead of Sending Gifts

Kelkheim/Tansania. Intact water pipes and thus access to clean water still cannot be taken for granted in many parts of the earth. All too often, the financial means are not there to improve sometimes catastrophic conditions in which people in the poorest countries have to live.

Because of this situation, Dr. Helmut Rothenberger created the TOOLS FOR LIFE foundation, which is now active in promoting sustainable programmes for the benefit of society, in the tradition of its founder. The TOOLS FOR LIFE FOUNDATION has set a itself a goal of helping people to establish water and power supplies where they live around the world. In the sense of "helping people to help themselves", TOOLS FOR LIFE would like to encourage people to take their fate into their own hands.

The aid programme for a cistern project in Tanzania

The programmme to celebrate 60 years of ROTHENBERGER was organised by the TOOLS FOR LIFE FOUNDATION under the management of Dr. Sandra Rothenberger, for the benefit of a project in Tanzania. Under the slogan "Contribute Instead of Sending Gifts", the construction of water cisterns in one of the areas in Africa where water is most scarce is being assisted in conjunction with the organisation Ingenieure ohne Grenzen e.V.

People in the Kagera region in the north west highlands of Tanzania only have a few natural sources of water, which are often far apart and also usually very polluted. Thus the use of rainwater via cisterns has proven itself as a cost-effective and low-maintenance technology. With one single cistern, up to 20,000 litres of rainwater can be collected during the rain season, which can supply up to 60 village inhabitants with clean drinking water during the dry season. At the same time, workmen and families there are educated about water quality and how to use cisterns. In the current stage of construction, 18 more cisterns will now be built, so that a total of 1050 village inhabitants can be provided with good drinking water by 2010.
